### Entropy in Thermodynamics and Information Theory

Information theory is a study of the storage and communication of digital information. ] The field was established by the works of Harry Nyquist and Claude Shannon.

Probability theory, statistics, computer science, statistical mechanics, information engineering, and electrical engineering are some of the fields that intersect. The field of thermodynamics was the subject of much of the mathematics behind information theory. The contributions by Rolf Landauer in the 1960s are explored in Entropy in thermodynamics and information theory.

Information theory is based on theory of probability. Information theory concerns itself with the distribution of information associated with random variables. The measure of information in a single random variable and the measure of information in common between two random variables are important quantities.

The former quantity is a property of the probability distribution of a random variable and gives a limit on the rate at which data can be reliably compressed. The maximum rate of reliable communication across a noisy channel in the limit of long block lengths is determined by the joint distribution of two random variables. Information theory has many important and direct applications, one of which is coding theory.

It can be divided into two different theories, source coding theory and channel coding theory. Information theory quantifies the number of bits needed to describe the data, which is the information entropy of the source. Information theory is based on communications over a channel.

### Information Theory

Information theory is a mathematical representation of the conditions and parameters that affect the transmission and processing of information. Information theory is most closely associated with the work of the American electrical engineer Claude Shannon in the mid-20th century, and it is used in psychology and linguistics. Information theory is more focused on the limitations of the processing and communication of information than on the detailed operation of particular devices.

Information is the source of a communication system. Information theory is a mathematical approach to the study of coding of information along with the other aspects of information.
