What Is Information Seeking Behaviour?

Using Animal Type to Discuss User Needs and Process Abstraction

It can be difficult to get people to discuss their existing behavior if some of the class are reluctant to admit to their weakness. If they are hesitant to talk about their existing behaviors, it may best to change the session so they don't have to share their animal type with the rest of the class. The class discussion can ask the class to imagine they are a particular type and to think of the strengths and weaknesses that may imply.

If the user needs are understood in a system orientation and level of abstraction is not known, the requirements analysis must be done through a process of datand process modelling. Email is important to a business, but it is unlikely to be included in vital records. Vital records are important for business continuity and must be available.

Models of Information Behavior

A model may be described as a framework for thinking about a problem and may evolve into a statement of relationships among theoretical proposition. The models in the general field of information behavior are usually statements, often in the form of diagrams that attempt to describe an information-seeking activity, the causes and consequences of that activity, or the relationships among stages information-seeking behavior. Rarely do such models advance to the stage of specifying relationships among theoretical proposition, but they may suggest relationships that are fruitful to explore or test.

Centralization of Information for Acquire and Understand Tasks

Users performing both Acquire and Understand tasks requested that centralization of information be provided, no matter how difficult or simple the task.

Sense-Making: A New Approach to Interacting with the World

Sense-making approach involves asking respondents the details of what happened in a situation step by step, known as the Time-line step. Respondents were asked about questions they had or things they need to know. Observers need to understand that people who are in contact with others come without preparation.

They do not come with a scripted answer. They will provide answer based on their experience. It would be a lot of fun and should give new insights.

It also encourages the use of redundant interviewing as it is an important tool in building the bond between reality and observers understandings. Observers will be able to grasp the whole situation with the use of redundant information. The Sense- Making emphasized on the fact that the information obtained is out of their box and understanding and only from the perspective of users.

Rice Farmers' Information Sources in the Country

In 2005, the total rice consumption in the country was 500,000 tons, which is equivalent to 22 kilomes person. The deficit in rice supply is largely due to imported rice. Rice import is 400,000 tons on an average.

In 1999, the self-sufficiency ratio of rice in the country was 42%, but it fell to 24% in the year 2006 The rice import bill is a source of concern to the government. Information source is an institution or individual that creates a message.

A good information source has a number of characteristics. A number of factors, including level of income, farm size, age, geographical location, level of education, are used to pick an information source. The NSSO 2003 survey found that small and marginal farmers accessed less information and from fewer sources than medium and large-scale farmers.

Farmers use agricultural extension officers, posters, televisions and radio as their source of information according to a study. Other authors said that personal experience, workshops and seminars, training sessions, friends and neighbours, magazines of agriculture, extension officers, local Government officers, non-Government organization, libraries of agriculture and posters were sources of information used by rice farmers. It is important to do a thorough study before choosing an information source or channel to address the needs of the farmer.

The major constraints were lack of extension agents and information service centers. Government should improve access to extension services by employing more extension staff. The Departments of Agriculture in the districts must use multiple information sources and other strategies to deliver relevant agricultural information to farmers in rural communities.

Identifying Users on Web Sites

If your site has user registration, it's easy to identify if people are on it. You can see the number of items in wish lists. Readers have found that the distinctions in the modes of seeking information are not crisp enough, despite the well described problem, examples and solutions.
