Introducing yourself to the audience: How to prepare for an oral presentation

It is helpful to approach the audience of a research paper in the same way one would prepare for an oral presentation. One can change her style, tone, and diction when presenting to different audiences. It is the same when you write a paper.

If you ever get the chance to present at a conference, you may need to change your written work into an oral work. One of the purposes of a research paper is to add something new to the academic community, and the first-time researcher should understand her role as an initiate into a particular community of scholars. The student's understanding of her audience will grow as she increases her involvement in the field.

How to Know Your Audience

Knowing your audience is important for running a successful business. Promoting and selling your products to the right audience is necessary. The lay audience, managerial audience, and expert audience are the three categories of the audience.

The Audience of Technical Documents

It is not enough to identify a single audience for documents. There are different types of readers who use them, each with different needs and interests. All should be considered when analyzing the audience for a technical document.

Analyzing and Evaluating a Document

Imagine reading a long block of text and seeing different ideas in the next section. If you are reading a novel or news article, you will lose interest in it if the author is very quick to speak. It is helpful to position yourself as a reader during the writing process.

Do you have the ability to focus easily on each point you make? A fresh paragraph is one of the ways that effective writers use to start their writing. The analysis does not simply repeat information from the original report, but considers how the points relate to one another.

The student can uncover a discrepancy between the points that are backed up by statistics and those that require additional information by doing this. Analyzing a document involves a close look at each of the individual parts. Blending individual documents into a new document is the purpose of an academic synthesis.

An academic paragraph synthesis considers the main points from one or more pieces of writing and links the main points together to create a new point, one not duplicated in either document. The purpose of the report can help focus and structure it. A summary should give a factual overview of your findings.

Using the Audience in Writing Proposals

The audience in mind is what makes assignments designed with that in mind. If you are writing a business or legal memo, your intended audience is likely to be people with whom you work, or your co-workers. If you are writing a proposal, the intended audience may be a professional but not someone you know.

What you say to your parents and friends may be different than what you say to the insurance company. Knowing your audience helps you to make decisions about what information you should include, how you should arrange that information, and what kind of supporting details will be necessary for the reader to understand what you are presenting. It influences the structure of the document.

To present an effective argument, you need to be able to appeal to your audience. When writing an academic paper, remember that your instructor is not the only one in the audience. Since the instructor is often the only one who will read the finished product, it is a risk to leave out important information if you personalize the paper to your level of knowledge.

omitting information that your instructor already knows can result in a weak paper. You will be writing to an audience that already has a particular opinion or stance on your topic, and your goal is to change their minds or alter their points of view. You might be required to write to an audience that is hostile to your ideas.
