Navigation with electronic charts

The positions of other vessels and targets on the ECDIS might be obscured because of the improper tuning of the radar or anti-clutter on it. It should be possible to display the information in a north-up orientation. Other orientations are allowed. The orientation should be changed in steps large enough to avoid the display of the chart information.
The method of presentation should make sure that the displayed information is visible to more than one observer in the light conditions of the bridge of the ship. 11.47 The position of the ship should be derived from a continuous positioning system that is consistent with the requirements of safe navigation.
A second independent positioning source should be provided whenever possible. ECDIS should be able to identify discrepancies between the two sources. When the input from position, heading or speed sources is lost, the ECDIS should provide an alarm.
