The Growth and Evolution of the Telecommunications Sector

The telecommunications sector used to be dominated by a club of big national and regional operators. The industry has been deregulated and innovation has been rapid. In many countries, the government has privatized and faced new competitors.

The traditional markets have been turned upside down as the internet and mobile services have grown more and more popular. Residential and small business markets are the toughest. Competitions rely on price to get the attention of households and heavy investment in efficient billing systems to succeed.

The corporate market is the favorite. Residential customers are more price sensitive than big corporate customers because they are concerned about the quality and reliability of their calls. Large multinational companies spend a lot on telecom infrastructure to support their operations.

They are happy to pay for premium services. The shares of telecommunications companies have characteristics of both income and growth stocks. Small companies that offer wireless services provide the best opportunities for share price appreciation.

Conservative investors tend to prefer larger companies that deal with equipment and services. Value investors can find good picks in the telecommunications sector. The need for telecommunications services is still important even in a changing business cycle.
