Communication apprehension is not the same as stage fright. Stage fright is a response to either the performance or the crowd. It is experienced by almost everyone.

Communication apprehension is experienced by people with a long acquaintance. Communication apprehensions will be related to situational constraints, and personality orientations play a more significant role in early stages of meeting someone. Learned responsiveness is different from learned helplessness.

A person who is able to discern contextual differences and has developed positive expectations for communication situations is able to be responsive. In situations where the person holding higher status is the one who is in charge, appropriate behavior is usually defined by that person. If you are being evaluated, talking in front of your boss or teacher may be intimidating.

The instrument is made up of twenty four statements, which are based on four communication contexts: public speaking, speaking in small groups, large groups, and to another person. The instrument has six statements on it. The PRCA-24 is reliable and has high validity.

Sub-scores in the four contexts are less reliable than the total PRCA-24 score because of the reduced number of items. A technique called cognitive restructuring can be used to prepare for a speaking experience. Cognitive restructuring is changing how you label your responses.

Communication Apprehension in Public Speaking

If you are in a new situation, you should speak in a new setting. Communication apprehension can be experienced. The first time you do a presentation, you will be more nervous than the hundredth time.

Audience anxiety is a type of communication apprehension where you are more anxious about a specific audience than the situation. If you speak in front of a certain group of people, but not another, you could be experiencing communication apprehension. It might be ok to speak in front of other students, but not in front of an audience of teachers and professors.

The audience characteristics include similarity with the audience, any status of the audience, size, and familiarity with the audience. The perceived threat level and potential consequence of failing would be different in front of different audiences. Being a bit nervous can be good for your performance and senses.

It is not a goal to stop being nervous. If the problems are bad enough to restrict you from doing things you want or need to do, the below hints can be used. There are several ways to handle communication apprehension.

You might need to deploy several of them in order to contain the communication apprehension. It is possible to use relaxation techniques to make you less tense before the event and to understand which areas are more difficult for you to perform in. Start with smaller crowds, get used to the topics and settings, and gradually make it more difficult for you.

Confidence and Anxiety in Speakers

The speakers rate themselves less anxious than the speakers are. The audience is not likely to perceive the level of anxiety you are experiencing accurately. Some of the most effective speakers will return to their seats after their speech because they are so nervous.

Confidence is more attractive than looks. Women rate confident men more attractive. Self-confidence is a biological signal that shows highly desirable traits that can be passed on to offspring.
